Vietnam
has more than 80 million inhabitants but has only two Ultimate clubs,
one in Hanoi and one recently established club in Ho Chi Minh City
(Saigon). The Hanoi Ultimate Club, exists of roughly 40 players and
although the numbers are low the
enthusiasm and intensity of Ultimate in Hanoi is high! Sports and exercise are an important part of Vietnamese daily life, from early morning till late in the evening you can see people practising Tai Chi and badminton at all corners of the city. Ultimate Frisbee has an enormous potential to become big in Vietnam. In contrast with most of the Ultimate clubs in other big cities in the region like Hongkong, Sjanghai, Beijing, Singapore, Bangkok, Taipei en Jakarta, where the teams mainly depend on North American and European expats, the regular team in Hanoi exists primarily of Vietnamese players and the number of expats is only few. A consequence of the composition of the club and the economic and political situation in Vietnam is that the majority of players have no possibilities to participate in tournaments in the region. This lack of competition and the limited exposure to Ultimate being played at a high level is a major drawback for the further development of Ultimate in Vietnam. In order to send some of the Vietnamese players to a 'real' tournament and get some of this much needed experience, and furthermore to support the club in Hanoi to pay for fields and material we have started a sponsoring campaign. To raise the necessary funds HUC designed a set of unique Hanoi Ultimate shirt and discs in the typical powerful Vietnamese Socialist propaganda style. This unique type of art is still very present in every day life in Vietnam (see at the bottom of this page). The shirt and discs are unique and have already proved to be popular items within the Ultimate community worldwide.
