Hanoi mini tournament

Wow!!! Saturday, 29 November 2003 is one of the days that I will never ever forget. It's the day when Hanoi Ultimate Club (HUC) had its VERY FIRST MINI TOURNAMENT IN HANOI!

All together we wrote a new chapter for HUC's history today. It's high time for you to turn the page or scroll down your scroll bar for more.

Well, we had 3 teams playing against each other for more than 3 hours. First of all it was team SAY-O v.s team BOOM (I love these names).

I must say that the players for these two teams are all stars but wait till you hear of SIEU SAO, meaning SUPER STARS, it's MY team. For those of you who didn't come, which is such a pity, please take a look of our BEAUTIFUL AND FUN FUN FUN PHOTOS for references who's who.

SAY-O beat BOOM after 45 minutes of making beautiful points. I learnt a lot watching you guys playing so professionally. The final score was again 7-5.

Then it was time to sing and praise the spirit of the game. I still remember laughing so hard that my cheek hurt and turned all red.

Boom's song for SAY-O went something like this: 

U R MY SAY-O, MY ONLY SAY-O

You are my Say-o, my only Say-o

You make me happy playing frisbee

It doesn't matter winner or loser

It's so much fun to play with Say-o

I could feel the spirit of the game burning within us in that cold early winter morning.

After that, the frisbee was pulled over again. This time it was between MY team, SIEU SAO and SAY-O. Before I go on, I think I need to stop to tell the truth, SIEU SAO is just a nominal name that we used to remind us of the dream of becoming ultimate "superstar" players someday. But we all understand that it's a long way to go from here and that one of our first steps should be to participate in mini tournament like this. Frankly speaking, SIEU SAO is a group of UNIS (United Nations International School) kids and 5 girls (Caro, Hang, Ngan Ha, Hieu and me Xuan) versus a group of all stars, namely, anh Linh, David, Suzie, Mai, Hai, Tu, chi Thu and a lot more. 

But that doesn't mean we were scared of them. We tried to play the best that we could and guess this, we almost, just almost beat them at this final score 9-8. Can you believe that?

We decided to sing this song to SAY-O:

" VIETNAM HOCHIMINH

VIETNAM HOCHIMINH

SAY-O BEAT SIEU SAO

WE ARE VERY SAD. BOO HOO HOO

BUT WE HAD FUN ANYHOW."

We didn't have that much break because after 45 minutes of waiting the BOOM team just couldn't resist the temptations of frisbee anymore.

BOOM is a strong team in the sense of skills, experience and muscular strength. We, SIEU SAO, decided to stick to a new tactic after a row of scores lost to BOOM. It worked!!! We learnt that if we are small we just can't play fast. We switched to the alternative of doing short passes until we were over the other half of the field then we should play deep. But sadly, that was a learning experience and by saying that I mean, we lost to BOOM at last. Score 10 - 3.

The Final: BOOM versus SAY-O. Wow this is really tough. Both teams are sooo good. I wanted to bet on one team for ice cream but could not rally enough support though. Anyway, we ran out of time for the final round and the final score was 3-1. When the clock struck 12 o'clock. BOOM won. Congratulations!!!

Then it was time for the Prize ceremony. BOOM got gold chocolate medals and a BEAUTIFUL PINK CUP. SIEU SAO got lollipops for THE SPIRIT OF THE GAME. And the rest got one bowl of Bun bo Nam bo, bananas, oranges and watermelon for retreat. It was such a GREAT GREAT time.

Much as I tried I can’t tell you the spirit of the game, which is not something easy for you to talk about. Spirit is something you gain from being there and play the best you can with your teammates. See you next time soon.

We also had a special visit by the Schallers family who all came and cheered for us.
