APRIL-MAY 2005

Jacky Chan honorary HUC member!

On 24 of April '05 the famous Chinese action film star Jacky Chan came to Hanoi to support the Hanoi Ultimate Club to promote the sport of Ultimate in Viet Nam and to act as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF/UNAIDS to call for an end to the discrimination of people living with HIV/AIDS and make an appeal for more care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS. The Hanoi Ultimate Club wholeheartedly supports Jacky Chan's plea.

For this great honor and for his great work the Hanoi Ultimate Club offered Jacky Chan a honorary membership. During this ceremony Jacky signed a white virgin HUC disc, which will be kept as a treasure in the future HUC clubhouse.

Andrew's move to Saigon

The legendary father of Hanoi Ultimate: Andrew Scyner has moved to Saigon to help the Ultimate Frisbees of Saigon further develop their club and to work. The Hanoi Ultimate Club refuses to say farewell to him since he is still in the country and because we are sure that we will see him very often in Hanoi! We hope that the Worldbank in Hanoi needs his expertise on a regular basis and Ly will be able to persuade him to travel north frequently!

Andrew we miss you dearly!

Talking of Ly....

Where is she? Rumours were heard that she left for Saigon... Who can confirm this? Ly is a great organiser and is a very good publicity woman. Especially the male half of HUC  is always very happy to see her on the field.  Yes it is confirmed... Ly is in the TV and film business in HCMC!

Hanoi Ultimate League has started!

Our club has been split in two, more or less equal, teams:

Team 1: LO LO TI CA (which stands for LOng LOn TIet CAnh - pig's intestine & blood pudding, Vietnamese specialty)
Stef (advisor), Mai (captain), Tu, Nga, Hai (female), Hoang, Hung, Matthew, Thanh, Tha`nh, Joe, Hang, Lan (female), Ly, Dung, Sam (Ton Ngo Khong), Ngan

Team 2: MAD MAN
Thuy (advisor), Phuc (captain), Lam, Quan, Nguyen Thuy Ngan, Son, Khang, Linh (male), Brandon, La^n (male), Thong, Trang, Linh (female), Hanh, Julie, Hai (boy)

The teams will play each Sunday an Ultimate game to 15 points. We will play 5 against 5 (perhaps sometimes 6 against 6). Due to rain we have played twice so far (9 and 16 May 2005). The score is 1-1, both teams won a game by 15-12.

Let see what happens next week!

Remembering Phil Gray

On May 8, 2005, we lost a friend, colleague, and supporter.  Phil Gray loved disc, although he didn't often get the chance to play.  As colleagues, Phil and I often shared our Ultimate stories and our passion for the game.  I knew from the first time I met him in early 2004, when his eyes lit up at my mention of Ultimate in Hanoi, that he needed no convincing.  Since then, as we became friends, I understood that if anyone understood the "Spirit of the Game," it was Phil.  His passion for fair play, his kindness towards others, his non-judgmental, curious approach, his deep commitment to a better, more understanding world, and his ageless wisdom, were an inspiration to all whose paths he crossed.  Phil didn't just understand Spirit.  He lived it.  And so his Spirit lives on with us: his family, his friends, colleagues, and occasional disc-mates.  May he rest in peace, and may his Spirit guide and inspire us all. Philip David Gray, born September 7, 1968, died May 8, 2005.  He is survived by
his parents, Phil Sr. and Beverly Gray, and his wife, Saida.
